✣ ✣ History ✣ ✣
Peter's parents were the picture of love, the kind that would slow dance to a song in the living room at midnight. It'd been love at first sight, le coup de foudre, as his French father would say. They'd fallen for each other instantly and hadn't stopped falling since. It seemed his parents were permanently stuck in their honeymoon faze. Peter's father strove to teach him French, the language of his fathers. His American mother disapproved of this, but never prohibited it. Therefore, Peter grew especially close with his dad.
So when he came home from school one evening to find his mother slow dancing with another man in the living room, he had a clear choice for which side he'd take in the divorce. The separation was sudden, but he and his dad managed to plunge into a new life together and support themselves for a time. Soon enough, his father broke. He still loved Peter's mother, even though she had gone off and married the man she'd cheated with. He took to drinking; he stopped working. Peter tried to make money for the both of them, but found himself forced to use illegal work.
He started selling drugs. All the revenue went to his father, who drank most of it away. He sold more drugs until he'd acquired a name for himself. After landing a particularly large deal, he came home to find his father missing. Peter tried the bar, but the bartender said his father had left an hour ago. It was a short subway ride to their house; an hour was much too long a walk. Peter returned home and hardly slept that night. The next morning, he heard his father was found dead at the bottom of a staircase. He had been drinking, of course, and broken his neck during the fall.
From then on, Peter lived on his own. It was too late for him to back out of drug dealing, but he didn't mind; it paid well enough for him. Peter never contacted his mother again, although she has attempted to contact him a few times. He speaks French and drinks plenty in a sort of strange remembrance for his father. SO yeah. He's managing.
